Committed to safety

Operating safely is fundamental to who we are. Our goal is to be the safest Class 1 railroad in North America.

In 2025, for the third consecutive year, CPKC led the industry with the lowest FRA-reportable train accident frequency among Class 1 railroads, building on Canadian Pacific's legacy of 17 consecutive years of industry leadership.

Felipe Bobadilla Bautista

“Being a railroader is very rewarding, as we can see that the infrastructure we build improves our network’s performance. It is also a commitment to safety because nothing is more important than keeping our people safe and our trains moving safely.”

Felipe Bobadilla Bautista, Assistant Director Projects, Houston, Texas

Stay safe near the railway

Hundreds of North Americans are killed each year in preventable incidents with trains. CPKC and Operation Lifesaver provide information encouraging safe behaviour around tracks and trains with the goal of eliminating injuries and fatalities.

  • Never ride a bicycle on or near railway tracks.
  • Never use railway tracks or railroad property as an ATV path.
  • Never walk on railway bridges.
  • Keep your dog on leash at all times around railway property.
  • Never take photo or video shoots on or near railroad tracks. It is illegal and dangerous.
  • Crossings in Canada and the U.S. have a 24-hour toll-free emergency number posted. Report any suspicious or unsafe around or on the tracks immediately.
  • If your vehicle is stalled on the tracks get out and get a safe distance away immediately. Call the emergency number on the crossing or 911.

Public Safety Communication Centre

CPKC’s Public Safety Communication Centre is dedicated to receiving emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and employees. We have highly-trained individuals responsible for engaging with our communities and employees in Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. We work alongside our dedicated railway police service and security teams to foster rail safety and security in collaboration with communities, law enforcement agencies and government organizations.

Dedicated police service

Our dedicated police service and security teams work closely with communities, other law enforcement and government agencies to promote rail safety and infrastructure security. Our teams are responsible for securing railway operations throughout Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. They operate on the CPKC rail network, as well as in areas where we have non-railway operations, to keep people, property and our operations safe.
