CPKC is committed to the safe transportation of all our customers’ freight especially those identified as “dangerous goods” by Transport Canada. In compliance, we are posting a breakdown of the top 10 dangerous goods CPKC transports by province.
In Canada, only 12% of loaded shipments on CPKC are regulated dangerous goods equating to the vast majority at 88% of loaded shipments not identified as dangerous good.

Additional Reporting Requirements
Transport Canada’s Protective Direction (PD) 36 requires that Class 1 Canadian Railroads provided registered* municipalities with the following information in a standardized format for presenting data:
- Dangerous goods report semi-annually, immediately;
- Dangerous goods report quarterly, within 24 months; and
These dangerous goods reports should include the following data:
- information on the number of unit trains;
- percentage of railway cars transporting dangerous goods;
- information on the nature and volume;
- number of trains, and;
- a report similar to the data reported in the provincial summaries that may be made public.
*Registered municipalities must have an Emergency Planning Official (EPO) listed on the EPO list managed by Transport Canada, through CANUTEC. The EPO must agree to the following:
- Use the information for emergency planning or response only.
- Disclose the information only to those persons who need to know for relevant purposes.
- Maintains confidentiality of the information to the maximum extent permitted by law.
To Register:
- A Chief Administrative Officer of a municipality may request Transport Canada, through CANUTEC, that the name of its designated Emergency Planning Official be added to the list of Emergency Planning Officials by providing the following information for the person: name, title, organization, address, e-mail address fax number, telephone number and cell phone number. This contact information will be shared with any Canadian Class 1 railway company who transports dangerous goods and any person who transports dangerous goods by railway vehicle.
